I recently published an article in The Los Angeles Times about a trip my family took to Belize last December. Admittedly, this was no family gap year, though we were fortunate to spend two weeks exploring this fascinating Central American country. Our first week was spent on an atoll on Belize’s stunning barrier reef–the article is focused on that experience–and our second week we focused on exploring the inland San Ignacio region.
If you’d like to read the full article, it can be found here.
We came away impressed with this small country, its amazing biodiversity, history of conservation efforts, jaw-dropping Mayan archeological sites, and most of all its cultural and lingual diversity.

Really nice article, Katie. The cultural diversity sounds unique, as does their cultural compatibility. We Americans could learn from this. Thanks for the memories
