I’ve already written here at Warmer Than Canada about the logistics of attending Spanish language school in Guatemala and described a day in our lives spent there last July, but two weeks ago the L.A. Times published my article: “Just say sí: A family of four spends a month in Guatemala trying to learn the language–but did it work?”
I hate to ruin the hook the editors intended in the headline, but I will tell you, the experiment did work. We learned un montón de español! For more details, the full article is available here.

I read your article in the LA Times when it was published. I am happy to say that my children and I are headed to San Pedro on Saturday to attend La Cooperativa. Thank you for writing such an amazing and inspiring article! We are looking forward to our adventure ahead! Any tips you may have would be greatly appreciated!

I’m excited for you, Maggie. What a great experience for you and your kids. Advice? Hmmm. Think about watching a soccer game up at the stadium, doing short hikes around the lake, making it to Café Idea Connection at least once, and most of all, allowing you and your kids ample down time (learning all of that Spanish takes a toll). Most of all, though, have fun!
